All of us have looked at the stars while thinking the most beautiful thoughts under their shiny lights. But did any of you ever wonder what the stars feel? What they might think when they look down upon us? Probably not, otherwise, you would know that some of them can get a bit sad as well sometimes.
Once upon a time, there was a star like that. A shooting star. He had spent century after century just shooting through the dark emptiness of space, seeing nothing but lifeless planets and black holes. He got used to his solitude. After all, he didn’t know anything else and he never felt aimless. He knew that he was pulled towards something.
He was right. One day he flew over a place we all know very well, our very own planet earth. He looked down and was stunned by all its beauty. The blue of the oceans, the green and brown of the land… There was one thing that grabbed him even more. He saw moving creatures! And not only were they moving, but they also looked up at him whenever he flew by. Thousands upon thousands of eyes and all with a unique soul reflected through them. The more he noticed them, the more he could hear their voices whispering wishes at him.
‘Please make this last forever. I wish he could love me as much as I love him. Let her choose me over everybody else…’
The poor little star desperately wanted to grand all the wishes, but how could he possibly help them? How could he know about love after spending most of his life shooting through a vast emptiness?
So it happened that one day he just couldn’t handle all the pleading whispers in his head anymore. He dropped himself into the cool water of the ocean where all the voices were instantly muffled. In this peaceful silence, he could finally freely float around, the sparks that used to light the skies behind him now a tail that danced on the currents of the ocean.
The silence he had craved for soon became suffocating. What could he do? No wish ever reached the bottom of the ocean, that’s simply not where wishes want to go. He had only one idea. He started to repeat the sentences he had heard so many times.
‘I wish I could have someone to love. I need someone to share my life with. Show me what it means to feel…’
All his words vibrated through the water until they were taken by the waves. It was not much, but it was the best he could do.
He was nearly running out of whispers when he felt a shock in the water. Waves were bringing him off balance. When he could finally open his eyes again, he saw a shooting star like himself. They started to dance around each other, shining in new colors together until their tails locked them in a warm embrace.
‘I got tired of the voices,’ she said.
‘But I like yours,’ he answered.
‘I like yours too.’
And as they looked at each other, he finally understood what all those wish whispers had been talking about.
