Locks Of Life

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who was blessed. Was she rich? Not really. Was she the most beautiful girl in the world? That’s not it either. No, this girl was blessed because she had a lot of love around her.

This blessing brought her a happy life with everyone she cared for close by. Her family and friends, her cat Gini who slept on her bed every night and goat Geri who stuck his head through her window every morning. The girl was so in love with life that she didn’t notice how her beloved cat started to lose hair. How her grandparents hunched over further and further, or how the wrinkles in her parent’s faces got deeper. She chose to live in a bubble.

Like any bubble, it was only a matter of time before destiny stuck a big old needle in it. As she woke up one morning, she noticed how Gini laid still on her sheets.
‘It’s time to wake up,’ the little girl said.
‘Come one, there is Geri inviting us to start the day.’
But, no matter how much she spoke to her little friend, nothing happened.

‘Mum, dad, Gini is not waking up.
Her parents immediately knew what was happening.
‘Please sit down honey. There’s something we need to explain to you about life. Everything that lives will die one day. It will happen to all of us. Now it’s Gini’s turn to go.’
The girl started to cry. Her little shoulders shaking as tears ran down her cheek.
‘But I don’t want her to go. I want her to be with me forever.’
Her father held up his finger with one tiny hair on the tip of it.
‘See this? After we die we all lose one hair. It’s a special one. It’s what shows our life from beginning to end, with every special moment lighting up. You can have a look at it to remember all the beautiful moments you had with Gini. After that, you have to blow it into the sky where her life will rest between the stars.’

After her parents had left, she took a last look at the hair. Every moment of playing, cuddling, and waking up together brought a new tear to her eye. The little girl made a decision. She looked around, took a deep breath and then knotted the hair to her own. From now on she could dream about their time together whenever she wanted.

Of course, more and more of her loved ones died and every time she repeated the same thing until she had a head full of brightly shining locks.

One night she felt a pull while she was asleep. She opened her eyes and saw all the hair floating above her head, lighting her room with their colors. From that day on, the pull was there wherever she went and she heard their whispers at night.
‘Let us go, please let us go.’

She decided it was enough and walked outside to where the stars shone brightly. She cut the hairs one by one and blew them into the sky.
A smile appeared around her lips as they found their way to the stars. She knew that it was because of them that her own unique hair was going to show so many beautiful moments.
